Santareme
Santareme is a residential suburb of St Francis Bay, across Harbour Road from the old village. It is named after Santarém in Portugal, home town of the navigator Manuel Perestrelo, and is known for Mediterranean-style homes with terracotta roofs, generous stands and, on many of them, sea views.
Santareme was the town's next extension beyond the original village, started around 1979. It suits buyers who want a freestanding home with space, often with a sea view.
The coast is close by. Granny's Pool and the Heritage Eco Centre are on Harbour Road, and the first section of Santareme is within walking distance of them.

Where is Santareme in St Francis Bay?
Harbour Road forms the line between the old village and Santareme. On one side are the white-walled, black-roofed cottages of the village; on the other are Santareme's villas. Streets include Tom Brown Boulevard and Malaga Place.
Many stands are elevated and face north or north-east, which is where the sea views come from. Granny's Pool, with the Heritage Eco Centre, is on Harbour Road. From there the Two Harbours Walk follows the coast to Port St Francis in about an hour, on footpaths, wooden steps and some rocky sections.
How is Santareme different from the St Francis Bay village?
The look is the main difference. The St Francis Kromme Trust describes Santareme as "Mediterranean type houses with terra-cotta tiled roofs and walls of various muted earth tones", where the village is all white walls and black roofs. Stands are also generous, and Private Property notes that many are north-facing, close to the beaches and green space.
Building plans in Santareme still fall under the St Francis Aesthetic Standards, published in June 2024, so check the rules that apply to your stand with the Aesthetics Committee before you design.
What kind of property is in Santareme?
Santareme has a mix of freestanding family homes, many with sea views, and vacant plots for buyers who want to build. Many stands are elevated, which is where the views come from.
Compared with canal or golf estate homes, Santareme is a common choice for buyers who want a full house and garden, or a plot to build on. On 6 October 2026 Property24 listed 19 properties for sale in Santareme, a mix of houses and plots, with plots from R680,000.

Who buys in Santareme?
The mix of houses and vacant plots draws two kinds of buyer: families and retirees looking for a freestanding home with space and a view, and people buying a stand to build their own. The beach, Granny's Pool and the walk to Port St Francis are all close, and the village shops are a short drive away. If you are thinking of building, Seal Point Estates can point you to plots that suit the view and orientation you are after.
